Description

Children of the Kalevala: Contempary American Finns Relive the Timeless Tales of the Kalevala by Lauri Anderson.  1997; 121 pages.

As in Heikki Heikkinen, Lauri Anderson regales his readers with stories of more "Yoopers" (Upper Peninsula People).  Yoopers live above the Mackinac Bridge, which connects Michigan's two peninsulas.  Trolls live below the bridge.  The stereotypical Yooper is Finnish, drives a very old and very rusty pickup, loves his beer, is opinionated to beat the band and distrusts anyone not from the UP.

A Yooper Finn is defined, at least in part, by his relationship to the Kalevala, the national epic of Finland.  The Kalevala is full of heroic backwoods figures who perform great deeds in the pagan world.  If a Yooper's life has taken on mythic proportions within the closed world above the bridge, he dies a happy man.
